Dry Well or Pump Failure?
The pattern that points at the well
The single most useful signal is recovery. If water runs out during heavy or sustained use — long showers, laundry, filling a tub, irrigation — and comes back after the system has been left alone for a period, the constraint is likely how fast the well can supply water rather than whether the pump can move it.
Other signals that lean the same way:
- Problems that track with dry seasons or extended drought conditions
- Air spitting from taps as the supply is drawn down
- Increasing sediment, cloudiness or gritty water during heavy use
- Neighbours on private wells reporting similar experiences
- A history of running short that predates any equipment complaint
The pattern that points at the equipment
- Water stopped abruptly with no relationship to how much was being used
- No recovery at all after a long rest period
- Breaker tripping, unusual noise, or the pump making no sound at all
- Rapid on-off cycling, which is far more typically a tank or control symptom
- A gradual decline in pressure over months, independent of usage patterns

Why it matters commercially
Pump replacement is a large expense. If the underlying constraint is yield, that expense does not solve the household's problem — and the situation is rarely discovered until after the invoice.
Say this out loud when you request service: "Before we replace anything, I want to know whether the well itself can supply what we're drawing." A competent provider will not be offended. It is a normal part of evaluating a private well system.

- Measuring static water level and observing recovery behaviour
- Comparing pump setting depth against the water level
- Assessing yield relative to the household's actual demand
- Reviewing well construction records where available
- Considering seasonal and regional groundwater conditions

Seasonal and drought context
Groundwater conditions vary with season and with longer-term drought. Where a shortage coincides with dry conditions, that context belongs in the diagnosis. Current conditions should be checked against official state and federal monitoring rather than assumed.
