Well Pump vs Pressure Tank
Decision support tool
Is it the pump, the tank, the controls, or the well?
Select at least one symptom to see the areas worth checking.
The four areas
The pump moves water. On most modern Virginia wells it is a submersible unit hanging down inside the well casing; on some shallower systems it is a jet pump at the surface.
The pressure tank stores pressurised water so the pump does not start on every tap.
The pressure switch and controls decide when the pump runs and when it stops.
The well itself is the source. Its yield and recovery set the ceiling on what any equipment can deliver.
Symptoms cross between all four, which is why symptom-reading narrows the field rather than naming the fault.
Symptom comparison
| Symptom | Pump | Pressure tank | Switch / controls | Well itself |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No water at all | Possible | Unlikely alone | Possible | Possible |
| Low pressure throughout the house | Possible | Possible | Possible | Possible |
| Rapid on-off cycling | Less likely alone | Common | Possible | Unlikely |
| Pump runs constantly | Possible | Possible | Possible | Possible |
| Pressure surges then drops | Less likely alone | Common | Possible | Unlikely |
| Water returns after resting | Unlikely alone | Unlikely | Unlikely | Common |
| Breaker trips | Possible | Unlikely | Possible | Indirectly possible |
| Air spitting from taps | Possible | Possible | Unlikely | Possible |
| Sediment or cloudy water | Possible | Unlikely | Unlikely | Possible |
What only professional testing can confirm
The reason this page will not tell you which component failed is that the confirming evidence is not visible from inside the house. It comes from:
- Measured system pressure read against the switch's actual settings
- Tank precharge measured with the system depressurised
- Electrical testing of the motor and control circuit by a qualified person
- Observation of water level and recovery behaviour in the well
- Physical inspection of downhole equipment, which only happens once it is pulled
Testing is not a homeowner task
Why the distinction saves money
A pressure switch, a pressure tank and a submersible pump are not remotely the same expense — and on a submersible system the pump has to be pulled out of the well before it can even be looked at. Approving the largest job first, on symptoms alone, is how households end up paying for a pump that was never broken.
Bring the narrowed area with you when you request quotes. It changes the conversation. Then weigh repair against replacement.
