What the switch does
The switch senses system pressure. When pressure falls to the cut-in setting it closes the circuit and the pump starts. When pressure rises to the cut-out setting it opens the circuit and the pump stops. Everything else in the control chain — wiring, and on some submersible systems a control box — sits between that decision and the motor.
Because the switch is the decision-maker, a fault in it presents as pump behaviour rather than as switch behaviour. That is the whole difficulty.
Pump not starting
When a pump does not start at all, the possibilities span the whole control chain: no power reaching the system, a tripped breaker, a switch that is not closing, a fault in the control components, wiring damage, or the motor itself.
Safe observations you can make without opening anything:
- Whether power is out generally, or was recently interrupted
- Whether the relevant breaker at the panel is in the tripped position
- Whether there is any sound from the pump or equipment when demand is placed on the system
- What a visible pressure gauge reads, if one is safely readable
That is where homeowner observation ends. Organise the rest of the symptoms and have the control system evaluated.
Pump not stopping
A pump that runs without shutting off has not reached its cut-out pressure. Either the pressure genuinely is not getting there — pump performance, a leak, or a supply limitation — or it has and the switch is not responding to it.

How the tank interacts with the switch
The switch and the tank are effectively partners. The switch decides when the pump runs; the tank decides how long the pump can stay off between decisions. When the tank loses its stored volume, the switch ends up making that decision far too often — the switch is working correctly and the symptom is still rapid cycling.

An evaluation of the control side typically involves:
- Reading actual system pressure against the switch's cut-in and cut-out settings
- Confirming whether the switch responds correctly at both thresholds
- Checking accessible wiring and control components for faults
- Checking the pressure tank's precharge against those same switch settings
- Establishing whether the pump responds when the control side is confirmed good
A switch is an inexpensive component relative to a pump, which is exactly why it is worth confirming before any downhole equipment is quoted.
