Well Pump Running Constantly

A pump that will not shut off is telling you one specific thing: the system is not reaching its cut-out pressure, or the switch is not acting on it. Everything else is working out which.

Do not simply leave it running

Continuous operation risks overheating the motor and, where the well cannot keep up, running the pump against insufficient water. If you cannot get it evaluated promptly, ask a qualified professional about safely shutting the system down rather than leaving it running indefinitely. Do not bypass or jumper the pressure switch to control it.

The two broad explanations

Pressure genuinely is not reaching cut-out. Water is leaving the system as fast as the pump supplies it, the pump can no longer produce the required pressure, or the well cannot deliver enough water for it to build.

Pressure is reaching cut-out but the pump does not stop. That is a control-side problem — the switch or the wiring is not responding. More on control faults.

Safe checks

  • Turn off every fixture and confirm the pump still runs with no demand
  • Check toilets for silent running and outdoor taps for drips
  • Look for unexplained damp ground along the line between well and house
  • Read the pressure gauge, if safely visible, and note where the pressure plateaus
  • Note whether this began suddenly or built up over time
  • Note whether it coincides with heavy use, irrigation, or dry weather

That is the extent of safe homeowner checking. The rest is measurement.

The well-yield case

If the pump runs continuously during and after heavy use and behaves normally again the next morning, the well's ability to supply water may be the constraint. This is the case where replacing equipment is most likely to disappoint.
