Submersible Well Pump Replacement

On a deep-well system the pump lives inside the well, below the water, hanging on the drop pipe. That single fact shapes almost everything about how replacement is scoped and priced.

What a submersible system looks like

A submersible pump pushes water up rather than drawing it up. The motor and pump are a sealed unit set below the static water level, connected to the surface by a drop pipe carrying the water and a cable carrying the power. At the surface there is a well cap, then piping to the pressure tank, switch and house.

Because everything downhole is inaccessible without pulling it out, a submersible replacement is as much a removal job as an installation job.

Pump setting depth versus total well depth

These are two separate numbers and confusing them leads to quotes that cannot be compared. The setting depth — how far down the pump hangs — is the figure that drives the amount of drop pipe and cable involved, the handling method, and the time on site. Total well depth is how deep the well was drilled.

Total well depth and pump setting depth are different numbers. The one that drives the work is how deep the pump hangs.

Removal complexity

Removing a submersible pump means bringing the pump, the full length of drop pipe and the full length of cable back to the surface, handling it safely at ground level, and doing it without contaminating the well. Depending on setting depth and materials, this may need mechanical handling equipment rather than hand pulling.

Complications discovered during removal are common and legitimately change scope:

  • Drop pipe found corroded, brittle or leaking at joints
  • Cable found damaged or degraded along its length
  • Components seized in the casing
  • Torque arrestors, splices or fittings that need replacing
  • Casing or wellhead condition that has to be addressed before reinstallation

Ask in advance how each of these is handled commercially, so a discovery does not become a negotiation while your water is off.

Do not attempt this yourself

Pulling a pump, drop pipe or wiring from a well, and opening or removing a well cap or seal, are not homeowner tasks. Beyond the physical hazards, an open well is a contamination route.

Horsepower and sizing

Horsepower is not a preference. It follows from the setting depth, the pressure the system needs to deliver, and the flow the household requires — and it interacts with the electrical supply available at the property. Fitting a larger pump than the well and supply can support does not produce more water; it can produce a pump that runs harder against a well that cannot keep up.

Ask what sizing the provider is proposing and on what basis.

Well access

Practical access matters more than homeowners expect. Whether a vehicle or handling rig can reach the wellhead, what the ground and weather allow, whether the wellhead sits under a structure or in a pit, and how far the well is from a working area all affect method and time.

Evaluating the condition of the well itself

While the pump is out, the well is more open to assessment than at any other time. It is a reasonable moment to ask what was observed about the casing, the water level, and how the well behaves.

It also matters because of the outcome nobody wants: a new pump installed into a well whose real constraint is yield. Distinguishing a supply problem from a pump problem is worth doing before equipment is ordered.
