Well Pump Short Cycling
What short cycling is
In normal operation the pump fills the tank, shuts off at cut-out pressure, and stays off while the household draws down the stored water. A cycle takes a meaningful amount of time.
Short cycling is that same sequence compressed into seconds. The pump starts, runs briefly, stops, and starts again — sometimes repeatedly while a single tap is open. The most common reason is that there is no longer any usable stored volume between the pump and the tap.
You may hear it as rapid clicking from the switch, a pump audibly starting and stopping, or pressure that pulses at the fixture.
The tank is the usual suspect, not the automatic answer

Why this damages equipment
Motors experience their greatest electrical and mechanical stress at startup. A system cycling every few seconds accumulates thousands of extra starts in a short period. That accelerates wear on the motor, the switch contacts and associated components.
The practical consequence: a cheap tank or switch problem left running for months can end up contributing to a far more expensive pump replacement. Speed of response genuinely matters here — but so does fixing the correct component.
What a professional should measure
- System pressure at cut-in and cut-out, against the switch's actual settings
- Tank precharge with the system depressurised
- Tank type and physical condition
- Whether the system holds pressure when nothing is drawing water
- Whether tank sizing suits the pump and the household's demand
- Pump behaviour and electrical testing where indicated
Ask for the numbers, not just the conclusion. A provider who measured will have them.
How urgent?
This is not usually a same-hour emergency in the way total water loss is, but it should not wait weeks. Reducing water use in the meantime reduces the number of cycles the system goes through before it is evaluated.
