Common well pump problems
When homeowners say "the well pump is broken", the underlying fault is often somewhere else in the same system. The pump, the pressure tank, the pressure switch and control components, the wiring, and the well itself all sit on one chain — and a fault anywhere on that chain arrives at your tap looking much the same.

No-water symptoms
A complete loss of water is the symptom most likely to bring a provider out the same day, and also the symptom with the widest range of possible causes. It can come from a power or breaker problem, a control fault, a failed pump or motor, a leak in the system, or the well's own supply.
The single most useful thing you can do before the call is note whether anything changed: a storm, a breaker at the panel, an unusual noise, or heavy water use in the days before. Work through the no-water page to organise those observations.
Low pressure
Weak pressure everywhere in the home is a system-level symptom. Weak pressure at one fixture usually is not. Pump performance, pressure tank condition, switch settings, a restriction such as a clogged filter, and well yield can all present as low pressure, which is why remote diagnosis is not credible here.
Short cycling
Short cycling means the pump starts and stops rapidly instead of running a normal cycle. It is one of the more informative symptoms because it points strongly at the pressure tank and the switch — although leaks, demand patterns and pump condition can also be involved.
It also matters because repeated rapid starting is hard on equipment. A system that has been cycling for a long time deserves evaluation rather than being left running.
Pump runs constantly
A pump that never shuts off is failing to reach the pressure at which the switch would normally stop it. That can mean the pump is no longer moving what it used to, that water is escaping somewhere, that the control is not doing its job, or that the well is not supplying enough water to build pressure.
Electrical and control symptoms

Safe observations are limited to what you can see and hear without opening anything: whether power is out generally, whether a breaker at the panel is in the tripped position, whether the pump is audibly running, and what a visible pressure gauge reads.
How the pressure tank interacts with all of this
The pressure tank holds pressurised water so the pump does not have to start every time someone runs a tap. When it stops doing that, the pump takes the load — which is why tank faults so often look like pump faults from inside the house.

Pressure switch and control issues
The switch senses pressure and tells the pump when to run. It moves no water itself, but a fault in it can leave a perfectly good pump refusing to start, refusing to stop, or behaving erratically.

Repair cost is driven mostly by what has to be reached and how quickly. A diagnostic visit, a switch or control component, wiring work, pressure tank work, accessibility at the wellhead, and whether the visit is scheduled or an emergency all move the figure.
