Well Pump Tripping the Breaker

A breaker that trips is doing its job. It has detected a condition it is designed to interrupt. The correct response is diagnosis, not repetition.

Stop resetting it

You may reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call a qualified professional. Do not reset repeatedly. Do not replace the breaker with a higher-rated one. Do not bypass, jumper or "temporarily" wire around any protective device. Do not open control boxes or pressure switch covers, and do not test live circuits. If you see scorching, smell burning, hear buzzing, or see water near electrical equipment, keep everyone away and get professional help immediately.

Why this is not a DIY area

Well pump circuits carry enough energy to be lethal, and on submersible systems a substantial part of the wiring runs down a well shaft into water. Testing it safely requires the right instruments, the right procedure and, where applicable, appropriate licensing.

There is also a second risk that is less obvious: forcing a system to keep running past a protective trip can turn a repairable fault into a destroyed motor, and in the worst case into a fire or shock hazard. The protective device is cheaper than everything it protects.

What safe observation looks like

  • Note how often it trips and whether it happens immediately or after the pump runs for a while
  • Note whether it began after a storm, power event, freeze or recent work
  • Note whether other circuits in the property are affected
  • Note any burning smell, discoloration or visible damage — from a distance
  • Note whether the pump made unusual noises before this started

Take that list to the provider. It genuinely shortens diagnosis.

What professional diagnosis involves

  • Measuring actual current draw against the motor's rated values
  • Insulation resistance testing on the pump cable and motor
  • Checking the control box and switch components for faults
  • Inspecting accessible wiring, connections and the wellhead entry
  • Verifying the breaker and circuit are correctly rated and sound
  • Establishing whether the well itself is contributing through low water conditions

The outcome may be a control-side repair, a wiring repair, or a pump replacement if the motor has failed.

Meanwhile

Leave the breaker off. That means no water, which is genuinely disruptive — but a system with a demonstrated electrical fault should not be energised while it waits for evaluation. If the outage is not survivable for your household, say so when you request service so urgency is understood.
