The two depths — and why quotes go wrong when they are confused
Total well depth is how deep the well was drilled. Pump setting depth, or intake depth, is how far down the pump actually hangs. They are separate measurements and a well can easily be drilled far deeper than its pump is set.
Setting depth is the one that drives cost. It determines how much drop pipe and cable are involved, how the pump has to be handled coming out and going back in, and how long the work takes. If a homeowner gives a provider a total well depth believing it to be the setting depth, the resulting quote is built on the wrong number.
When you request quotes, state which number you are giving. Your well records may contain both.

What a replacement quote should tell you
- What pump setting depth the quote assumes, and how the price changes if the actual depth differs
- Which specific pump and horsepower is proposed, and why that sizing
- Whether drop pipe and cable replacement is included, excluded, or conditional
- Whether the pressure tank and controls are in scope
- What removal of the existing equipment is priced at
- What warranty applies, to which parts, for how long
- What happens commercially if the well itself turns out to be the limiting factor
The expensive mistake worth avoiding
The costliest outcome in this whole subject is a new pump installed into a well whose real constraint is yield. The equipment is fine, the installation is fine, and the household still runs out of water.
